Maartje van den Heuvel – guest curator LekArt 2022
Maartje van den Heuvel (1967) will be the guest curator for LekArt festival 2022 River Deep. Born and raised ‘under the river’, Maartje still spends a lot of her time there. She studied, works and lives ‘above the river’, in the Randstad. Culemborg is exactly at the centre of these two places.
Maartje has worked as a coordinating teacher at the St. Joost art academy in Breda for six years and currently she is a parttime curator photography for the Special Collections at the University of Leiden. Since 2000, she has regularly been a guest curator at museums and festivals in The Netherlands and abroad, often in the field of landscape ad visual art.
Over the years, Maartje had composed various exhibitions, like ‘Nature as Artifice’ (2008-2009), a travelling exhibition from the Kröller-Müller Museum in Otterlo, ‘Neue Pinakothek’ in München, ‘Aperture Gallery’ in New York City, ‘Zoet&Zout – Water en de Nederlanders’ (2012, Rotterdam arthall) and ‘Wild van Water’ (Zuiderzeemuseum Enkhuizen, 2016).
In 2018 she obtained a PhD in art history, with a subject on the intersection of art and the Dutch landscape, at the University of Leiden with her thesis ‘Picturing Landscape’.
